ONCEAIR is a leukotriene receptor antagonist (opposite-acting) that blocks substances called leukotrienes. It improves asthma symptoms and ameliorates allergic rhinitis by inhibiting leukotrienes. Patients should be told that they should never use oral montelukast for the treatment of acute asthma attacks and that they should keep their usual rescue medication in mind in an easily accessible place to use it for this purpose. In the event of an acute attack, a short-acting inhaled beta-agonist should be used. Patients should contact their doctor as soon as possible if they need more than usual inhalations of short-acting beta-agonists. Montelukast inhaled or oral corticosteroids should be discontinued and replaced immediately.
